Mr. Schauf (“Two Forks was missed chance” letter, July 7) is way off on his remarks that Two Forks was a missed chance.
I was at the old Supreme Court chambers of the Capitol in June of 1988 when then Gov. Roy Romer said yes (non-binding) to the project but with a conditional, “find alternative solutions.” Thank you Governor Romer and then finally EPA Chief William Reilly for vetoing the permit for the dam pursuant to the Clean Water Act in November 1990. The veto necessitated Denver Water Board to look at water efficiency (Denver didn’t meter water), recycle water (which they along with our water districts are now doing) and raise other existing dams (Gross Reservoir Dam now being raised).
Two Forks was a boondoggle and it anyone wants to truly educate themselves on this extremely controversial project should watch; https://coloradotu.org/blog/2020/5/the-two-forks-legacy-video, this video has a panel of former employees of the EPA and Denver Water, environmentalists and reporters. I wish I could have been at this event in May 2020 and thank each and every one of them. I find it interesting that even a former Denver Water employee stated during the event that, “We don’t need the water, we need the project.”
I also would like to know how Mr. Schauf thinks Two Forks would be full by now, considering most reservoirs are at all-time lows?
Thanks to all of those citizens that spoke against this project and helped preserve this area for all of us.
