Late afternoon rain didn’t deter enjoyment of rodeo

It was another successful year for the Elbert County Fair. The much anticipated yearly occasion took place from July 30 to Aug. 7 at the Elbert County Fairgrounds in Kiowa.

The 2022 fair offered seemingly countless events including the rodeo, market sale, parade and showmanship competitions for beef, swine, rabbits, goats, poultry and lambs.

Elbert County, in association with Colorado State University, has a thriving 4-H program. It also has growing school FFA programs. The Elbert County Fair provides opportunities for kids and teens to celebrate and showcase the projects.

According to Tammi Schneider, Elbert County Fair Board president, big highlights at the 2022 fair included Mutton Busting, the Kiddie Corral, and the Bulls, Broncs, and Buckaroos rodeo.

“This year we had a terrific Kiddie Corral full of rides, bouncy houses, a gaming truck, face painters, a train and zip line,” said Schneider. “Mutton Busting is always a big draw, and our Bulls, Broncs and Buckaroos rodeo was a crowd favorite even though the rain came through on Saturday late afternoon.”

This year’s fair was full of fun and celebration of the rural lifestyle. The fair is a chance for the community of Elbert County to come together for a free, family-friendly event.

“As always, we had an outstanding market sale, and this year the concert featuring Twenty Hands High was a big hit,” said Schneider. “Our fair is so special; I love Cowboy Church and the parade. I love the arena lights on for events like the Horseshoe Tournament and the Horse Pull.”

The Elbert County Fair is put on by the Elbert County Fair Board, CSU Extension staff, Elbert County and dozens of volunteers. The 2023 Elbert County Fair will be July 30 through Aug. 6.
